  • At Home with Apple Montessori: Frequently Asked Questions

Is this too much computer time for my child?

    • Our schedule has been designed to give the children breaks in between each class so that they are not online for long periods of time. The skills they are learning on the computer are supplemented with the hands-on curriculum, so your child will be able to build upon those skills away from the computer. At Apple Montessori, we focus on developing the whole child which requires that we help children balance learning (hands-on and virtual), free play, and relaxing.

Will my child feel alone and not part of a class learning virtually?

    • Our teachers have been doing a wonderful job communicating individually with each child. For example, there is morning attendance where the children talk independently and the teacher asks them questions. One of the great new add-ons for the fall is each teacher will have an assigned time to meet with each child individually one day a week to work on areas they’re struggling with and to build a positive, nurturing relationship with your child—just like in school.

How much time should I as a parent expect to contribute to my child’s learning?

    • This will depend on the child’s age. A younger child will require more help than an older child.  We will spend the first week teaching the children the skills they need to be able to succeed in the online classroom and fully utilize these hands-on materials. We want them to be as independent as possible. Children have a natural affinity with technology, and they learn very quickly. We have seen children accomplish most of the work on their own after an initial week or two of parent assistance. Just remember, your child wants to be independent and learn, it just takes time to become fully oriented to the new environment. One of the best things you can do for your child is to have designated space for your child with the supplies they will need for each day out and ready for use.  The more you prepare your child, the less you need to be involved.

Is your virtual program academic? Can I expect my child to progress at the same rate as if he/she was in school?

    • That is our ultimate goal! Part of why we have created this wonderful new virtual classroom is to mirror the in-school classroom. Through the use of the links, materials, academic packets, and one-on-one instruction, we are able to track your child’s progress and address any challenge areas. This will help your child achieve the same academic goals as we would in the classrooms.

How do you manage your virtual classrooms live?

    • Our teachers teach grace and courtesy lessons. Children learn how to manage themselves, how to raise their hand, and how to take turns. We do this just as we would in the live classrooms.

Will this be good for my child if he has a shortened attention span and has trouble focusing on the classes?

    • In the first two weeks, it is common for children to have trouble focusing, but this is no different than in a normal classroom environment. It usually takes them 2-3 weeks to adjust to the new way of doing things—whether live or virtual—but we find that the more they interact with the lessons and teachers, the more they get involved; these actions, along with parent support, guidance, and consistent structure creating an environment for learning, are ingredients for success.

What supplies/technology do I need to provide for my child to participate in the At Home with Apple Montessori program?

    • We ask that each family have a laptop/tablet with an operational camera accessible to their child.  You will also need a printer and printer paper.  All other supplies, including the starter kit and monthly supplies, will be provided as part of the program.  Families should plan to pick up supplies monthly from an Apple Montessori location. We will also mail out supplies for an additional fee.

How often will you communicate with me about my child’s progress?

    • To support communication, we have implemented an efficient software system that will be used in our Infant, Toddler, and preschool classrooms to reinforce parent/school communication. This cutting edge “communication software” will foster even greater contact with our parents by allowing staff members to send daily reports.

    Is my child’s information private?

    • While using this program, we maintain that all information gathered is considered private communication between the school and our families. As with our general school policies, no personal information is ever shared with any external party. As a parent, you will only receive information specifically related to your child and their day at Apple Montessori.

How does my child access the virtual classroom?

    • This classroom will be sent to you in PDF form, and you will be able to log in. Each month, a new classroom and new password will be emailed to you.

How do the live meetings/sessions work?

    • We use Zoom for all live time with your teacher and class. You will receive a link to sign into at those class times for the month. Teachers will also schedule a one-on-one session with your child once a week to assess their progress.

What if my child is absent from school or class?

    • If your child is going to be absent from the program for any reason, please mark them absent or send their teacher an email.
